Man Down Page 13
Of course, where Bree had gotten the information, he didn’t want to know, but he had a strong suspicion the man named Rory had been involved.
Beatrice was quiet, as if waiting for him to continue. He did. “If you want me to work for Shadow Force, you need to send me on missions that play to my strong suits.”
She nodded. “I agree.”
That was too easy. He suspected Beatrice didn’t usually do easy. “So we have a deal? I’ll work for you, Bree gets her job back, and you let the two of us go after this spy ring she’s flushed out in the Midwest.”
“Your wife has okayed this plan?”
“She has. Bree insists we team up together and go after it. It’s your choice whether we do it for you or someone else.”
Beatrice flicked a look at the other woman in the room, Cassandra Donovan. The attorney produced a contract and slid it in front of his face. “I’ll need you to sign this.”
This was the woman Bree felt responsible for, but she looked pretty healthy to Aidan. He accepted the pen Beatrice handed him and signed without reading it.
“She almost quit because of you,” he said in Cassandra’s direction.
“I know.” She nodded. “None of us were going to let her do that, though. She needed to get her mojo back, and that’s why Beatrice sent her to recruit you.”
Aidan had the feeling Beatrice knew all about Boris Vaslov and the spy ring he’d been sent to infiltrate and bring down all those years ago.
“Does she know you got her relieved from duty at the CIA?” Reece asked. At his surprised expression, she said, “I’ve seen your 201.”
She’d read his personal CIA file? His gut told him there wasn’t much that went on with her employees she didn’t know about or have a hand in. He’d spoken to a couple of the other SEALs who worked for her, and he had the strong suspicion they’d been on standby the whole time. A couple were already on the island the night of the open house, ready to provide backup in case Aidan failed.
Good thing he hadn’t.
“She suspects,” he admitted. “It’s another reason I’m working to earn her trust again. I did it to protect her, you know.”
“It’s what drives people like us.” Beatrice motioned between them. “We do what we have to do to protect those we love. Just be sure you come clean to her, and do it soon. I don’t want this issue to surface when you’re in the field.”
I plan to tell her right after her next orgasm. Best to keep that to himself. “I have a lot to make up to her, but I had to get her away from the Agency.”
“Her skills are better used for us, so I’m glad you did.”
“There’s another thing I need from you,” he said.
One beautiful eyebrow rose in question.
“Time off for Bree and myself. We don’t need a lot,” he said, “but it’s been a while since we’ve been on good terms with each other. I want to do something special for her.”
For the first time since he’d walked in the door, Beatrice smiled.
Bree waited for him in the spacious lobby downstairs. “Well? Did you accept the job?”
She was looking a lot better, her eyes bright, most of the bandages no longer needed, and fewer shadows under her eyes.
“She was absolutely against what I wanted at first,” he said, “but I was able to charm my way into getting her to agree to let you and I do what we do best.”
He gave her a grin, and she returned it. She seemed delighted they were going after the Iowa spy ring. “When do we leave?”
“I negotiated a second honeymoon before we head off to the assignment,” he said.
“Oh yeah? You were serious about that whole let’s get married again thing, huh?”
“Absolutely. I want to renew our vows, start over. A second honeymoon is definitely in order since we spent our first one drunk off our asses.”
“Okay. Where are we going?”
He threw an arm around her and lead her to the front doors. “Vegas, Mrs. McNamara. Where else?”
